In Which It Takes A Half A Bottle Of Rum To Fix A Problem

It's No Work Weekend!! My Platonic Husband and I kicked it off with an attempt to make Strawberry Daiquiris. The funny thing is that every time someone comes over they say "Hey, what can I bring?" and what I really want to say is "Laundry detergent, dish soap, paper towels, and food for the kids," but that's obviously not what they meant so instead I find myself saying "oh, just bring something to drink and a snack."

So in essence, "no, let's not think about how poor you are Eden, lets just drink and eat instead!"

Wait, isn't there a word for people who stuff their feelings down with food and drink alcohol while ignoring their real problems?

Oh wait.

Never mind.

But anyways, we decided to make daiquiris and let's just say that it didn't exactly go as planned. I make daiquiris quite a bit so I have no idea what was going on, I think the mix just wasn't very good.

After twenty minutes of absolute failure we started documenting this ill fated plan of ours.

Please excuse some of the fuzzy pictures, my Platonic Husband was laughing so hard she couldn't hold the camera steady.

Also, I feel like I should add that no, I'm not pregnant, I was just wearing an unfortunately unflattering hoodie with a zipper that bowed outwards.

Yay! Daiquiris!! We are so smart, yay!

If there is one thing I can thank my parents for, it's the super awesome blender they bought me (or rather for their grandkid's vegetables) mere days before I stopped talking to them.

Wait. They aren't strong enough, we need to add more rum!

Still not strong enough, more rum it is!

Wait, that's too strong. Let's water it down with more ice.

Now it's going to taste like water and rum. We need more daiquiri mix!

Take seven.

Nope, still not sweet enough.

Take ten.

Alright, let's taste this.

Geez, adding all that ice and daiquiri mix watered it down too much. Needs more rum.

Oh my gosh, this is getting really full.

Alright Platonic Husband, you taste this.

You know what? It's still not strong enough and the blender is so full that we can't add anything else. Whatever shall we do?

Fear not, we are smart people!

But...now it's not sweet enough.

Let's just add whipped cream!

We are so smart!

Seriously, we totally rock.

You know what goes with the world's strongest and sweetest daiquiris? Brownie bites!!

Duh.

Now we will just sit on the couch and hold each other's faces like complete freaks.

(I actually have no idea what we were doing. I mean I remember it, but it just seems weirder now. Did I mention that we made those drinks really strong?)

Yay!!

So that was fun.

Switching topics, one of the things that pains me the most about my financial situation is that my kids miss out on many of the things that other kids get to do. They've never been bowling, never been ice skating, we can't go to places like Chuck E. Cheese, things like that. When you have kids part of the fun is all of the things you are going to get to do with them as they grow up and while I have managed to find some creative ways to still accomplish that, there are so many other things that I feel sad knowing they are missing out on; things that I would really like them to have childhood memories of.

Well for Christmas someone gave us a gift card to the movie theatre and I have to say, I've been so excited to take them! The Girl Child has only ever been to a movie once before and The Boy Child has never been (He is only 3 so that's not a huge deal). Anyways, I did a little math and figured out that if we went to the cheap theatre, the one that plays movies that are just about to come out for rental, that we could all get in and still have enough left on the gift card to buy the ridiculously over priced popcorn. Because really, what fun is a movie for a kid if they don't leave with popcorn coming out of their ears. I called the theatre and yay, the popcorn is gluten free!

What is more fun than a movie and 8 tons of popcorn? A movie and 8 tons of popcorn with their friends! I asked my single mom friend and her three kids if they wanted to come along with us. For those of you regular readers, this was the friend I was with when we almost drown during a tsunami in the corn maze.

(we were talking about putting an alarm on our phone so we would remember to put The Boy Child's popcorn in his bag before we buttered it because he can't eat dairy)

So I went into this feeling all prepared; Water bottle for The Girl Child, Toddler Cup for The Boy Child, Ziploc bags to pour popcorn into, I grabbed a booster seat from the admission desk, and as we are walking down the aisle to our seats, before we even sat down, the Boy Child proceeded to drop his sippy cup which of course rolled down the slanted floor all the way to who the hell knows where. So there I am asking every row of people if I can look under their feet (by the light of my cell phone) until I find the cup and use about a gallon of hand sanitizer on it.

But after that it was smooth sailing!!

So that about sums up Friday and Saturday. It is now Saturday night and one of my friends asked if she could sleep over so that we could have a movie/game night and I actually said "no," which is very unlike me, but I need a break. So hello couch, hello DVR, I am very excited to spend some quality alone time with you!

I hope that you are all having a fantabulous weekend! If you are looking for an actual article to read, pop on over to YourTango and see why I think it's important for my daughter to see me naked. Yep, true story!

  1. That's awesome. I do have to wonder who could screw up a daiquiri, though. ;) More rum makes everything better.

I'm going to the movies myself this weekend. So awesome you could go, go with friends, and have treats for your kids! Happy No Work Weekend!

  2. You are so fun, Eden! More rum!! You and your platonic husband are great together.

SWIMMING should also go up on that list. (: I'm not being judgy but posted about bowling on a date with your boyfriend and was curious how dates factor into your budget. Do you weigh options every time or just try to go with the flow? Something the kids might have fun with is playing outside, cause kids love digging up worms and building forts and that kind of stuff. Dropping them off at the public library is also a good idea (for the girl child, at least). Board games too if the boy child is old enough.

You all look GREAT by the way and seem to be doing very well, I hope things stay like that!

    1. Haha, thanks :)

I try to find as many free things as I can for them. We do utilize the library a lot (they have a free music class) and we are on scholarship at the YMCA so we use their pool quite a bit. Mostly I just try to spend time with them and make it something unique. Dinner on the couch with a movie is something I use as a "treat" for them and they think that's really need. Board games is a big one for us as well. We do art projects, cook together, but The Girl Child hear's about all the places their friends went over the weekend when she gets back to school and I can tell she feels left out.

As far as dates go I never expect my date to pay for me, especially on a first date, so I'm pretty cheap. Like if it's dinner I won't order a drink and I'll get a side rather than a whole meal. I'm not a big person anyways so it doesn't look all that out of place. I'm fairly open with "hey, I'm on a budget and I can't afford to go xyz" and so then we will either do free or cheap things (local festivals, $1 bowling night, open mic night at the comedy club, cheap bar) or my date will pick up the tab if it's someplace he is dying to go.

Thank you for your sweet words!

  3. I'm not saying this with any sort of snark or holier-than-thou tone, but why do you drink alcohol, which is a known and proven carcinogen and toxin, but not gluten or other stuff? Or is that diet only for your kids and not you?

    1. I think I remember reading from another comment thread that they are in a gluten free diet for medical reasons so my assumption would be that they have allergies or celiac or something
