Celebrate With Me!

**I'm going to pop in here real fast and say that by the time this hits most of your inbox's, The Boy Child will be in surgery. I'll try and update on Facebook, thanks for all your messages. I've been reading them to him and he thinks it's very funny that he is getting his own emails! His sister is jealous, and that's been giving him an evil little grin.**

I know I’ve mentioned it on here a few times before, but every Monday I work at a chiropractic office. Oddly enough one of the chiropractors there is a guy that I went to high school with, and although he is a really great guy, an amazing chiropractor, and an active supporter of my nonprofit, my spine prefers a different adjustment technique so I see someone else in the office. In fact I "broke up" with his services by telling him "You know when you're having sex with someone, and you can tell that they are trying, and you know that they are really putting in the effort, but no matter what they do, they just don't do ya right? Well, I think we'd be better off as friends."

Because that made it less awkward.

Not that awkward bothers me.

(Click here for the other times I've embarrassed this poor man, including the time I made him believe I was a stripper or when I caught him looking me up in his year book).

In fact I don't remember him from high school at all, yet as part of an extended prank I'm pulling, I have convinced him that we did in fact know each other and that he was very mean to me. I'll have to let you know how this all pans out, but in the meantime, NO ONE TELL HIM.

(And also, random, but do you remember when I was trying to get Mr. Attorney Man to think I was getting him an office rodent? Why the hell does anyone stay in business with me??)

But anyway, so yes, chiropractor, work there on Monday’s, set stage: Chiropractor is sitting at the secretary’s desk looking at the computer and I’m standing roughly two feet away.

Chiro: “Eden! Come here!”

Me: “Dude, I’m like right here, no need to talk so loud.”

Chiro: “You have a birthday!”

Me: “I do. In fact, it happens every year, it’s kinda neat like that.”

Chiro: “It’s the same day as mine.”

Me: “Well, that is the day that awesome people were born.”

Chiro: “I wasn’t born, I just… was… but either way, HOW DID WE NOT KNOW THAT!?”

Me: “You are right! How DID we NOT know that!? What else do we not know about each other? What's your favorite TV show? What’s your favorite sport? Favorite food? What’s your favorite color? Hold on, LET ME GET A CHAIR.”

(He rolls his eyes at me)

Chiro: “We need to celebrate. (He looks at the secretary) Secretary, get a piñata.”

Secretary: “A piñata! I’m not getting a piñata, I’d have to fill it with candy!”

Me: “Damn straight you had better fill it with candy.”

Chiro: “I like candy. Oh, and get balloons too.”

So yes, this month is my birthday month!!!! Notoriously I have hated birthdays. I’ve had a few too many bad ones that have soured the whole thing for me, like the time that my parents forgot my 16th birthday and I held out hope the entire day that maybe they were just going to surprise me with something, and that dream came crashing down when I finally mentioned it to my father at 9:30pm and saw the look on his face. I’m not sure why I was even surprised, considering just a few years earlier they had told me I could have a birthday party, and then after I invited everyone they changed their minds and I had to uninvite everyone. That sucked.

But then I got married, a time to start fresh, and to my surprise, there were no more bad birthdays, because there were no more birthdays.

Despite the fact that every year on my ex’s birthday I did everything from bake a cake to make a big dinner, wrap presents, and decorate the house, he deemed my birthday non-existent, just as he did mother’s day.

We didn’t talk about it, celebrate it, it was just as if it didn’t exist.

Then my ex left and I got myself that snazzy new boyfriend I told you about, the one that moved into my house, promised me the world, and then moved out on my birthday after telling me that it wasn’t his job to pick up a wife and two kids thrown out like trash because he wasn't a garbage man.

So yep, birthday’s.

Fun times.

But this year, I’ve had just about enough of this shit, and so instead of waiting for anyone to celebrate me, I’m celebrating myself! I happen to think that I’m kinda fun, and there is nothing egotistical about being happy that you were born.

So yes, this month, 32 years ago, I was born.

Yay me!

And since I’m shamelessly celebrating myself this year, I would like a gift from all of you, because you know, it is my birthday after all.

I would like each and every one of you to leave a comment telling me one thing that you love about yourself. Yes, about you!! I want to know something that you love about yourself because there is nothing that I want more for my birthday, than to know that all of you are celebrating yourselves with me.

And then if you want to be super special, instead of attaching a card to that gift, turn around and tell someone in your life something that you love about them. If you have come to know me at all, then you should know that what I want most out of my life is to see people happy.

So happy birthday to me, yay I was born, and thank you all for celebrating with me!

You are born and then you die, but the lucky ones are the people who left a legacy with everything they did in between.

  1. Hi Eden, I´ve been following you for a long time now from Spain and I´m amazed of your strength. My family disowned me as well and I´m a separated mother of two and I created a non profit of make up classes (I´m a make up artist). Even though my life has not been as hard as yours, I can relate to so many things that you tell us here. What I´m most amazed about your blog is the number of trolls, I´ve been a victim of that too in my blog and I really can´t believe how many people hate themselves to act like that.
I just wanted to tell you that you´re amazing and that you help a lot of people like me to not feel lonely in the world, and I want to thank you for that. You´re unique.

  3. Happy Birthday. I like that I'm really smart and good at my job. I also like that I'm a pretty good mother--not the best, but I work hard at being there for my son.

  4. Happy birthday! This is also my birth month, but I am quite a bit older than you - haha. I like that I am a good mother and raised two great kids mostly on my own after my ex left a 20 year marriage. My son graduated college last year with an engineering degree, and my daughter graduates high school this month as valedictorian of her class. Yay me!

  5. Hoppy Birfday, Eden! Something I love about myself is my ability to connect with people quickly and easily. Being single, I do lots of things by myself. But I never feel alone, because I always meet new people, and it's usually not very long before we're chatting like best buddies. It helps me a lot in my work as well, because I can help put people at ease with a difficult situation, so that I can best help them.

    1. So wait... you chat with everyone like you are best buddies? I THOUGHT THAT WAS OUR THING.

Haha, nah, I'm super proud of you and you are right, it is one of your best qualities. Kudos to you for recognizing that!!

  6. Happy Birthday Eden! The thing that I like most about me is that I am a giver and I genuinely care about others. I really do love making others feel special. Yes I have had a lot of heartache but I seem to recover quickly. I too love to see others happy!

  7. Happy birthday, Eden! I've never commented here before but I love your blog and your willingness to share your life so openly with others. The thing I like about myself is my curiosity about other people. I genuinely am interested in learning as much as I can about everything I meet, and also in finding the good in people.

    1. Aw, thanks for letting me know you are here! Having a genuine curiosity in others is such an amazing trait. So many people are so self involved that it leaves everyone feeling as if no one cares to get to know them. People like you rock!! :)

  8. Happy Birthday!! And praying for your sweet boy. What I like about myself is my ability to overcome obstacles. I grew up in a bad home and became determined to not repeat it, my husband and I are struggling to make a living but we are making it no matter what for our daughter. I will conquer the bad to make it better and work for me.

  9. Eden, your blog and YOU amaze me. Just found my way to your site and started at the beginning. You are an incredibly engaging writer, so much so that I've been binge reading my way through your life. Love this blog SO much, thanks for sharing.

  10. Heh, I'll be 31 at the end of this month. Maybe we're birthday buddies. Happy birthday! Here's to hoping this one is a million times better than the crappy ones you've had in the past.

The thing that I like most about myself is that I am very patient and understanding. It's helped me work with all the kids at the YMCA for 10 years and has enabled me to work with lots of different people from all walks of life..

Good thoughts for the Boy Child. I hope the surgery succeeded in what it was supposed to do and he has a speedy recovery.

  12. Happy Birthday, Eden! I love my creativity and my ability to learn new skills. I knit, sew, embroider, quilt, and now I'm learning to spin. I'd like to get to the point where I make 75% of my wardrobe. I tried crochet last year but it isn't for me.

    1. Wow, now that is impressive!! I sewed a pillow once, hemmed a few curtians, but the majority of my sewing is done with those little travel kits that hotels give you. I'm going to send you everything I need repaired ;)

Send me some pics of your work, and way to go chica!

  16. Many happy birthday wishes, Eden!

Something I love about myself is that I can make my wife and daughters laugh every day. Hearing the joy in their voices as they laugh makes me feel like my day has been worthwhile.
